Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel . . . the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.

For three years, I've led an annual two-hour suffrage-themed bike tour around San Francisco. Turns out there are tons of fun and fascinating areas of intersection between the history of the bicycle and the history of women's suffrage in the U.S. and England. At the end of the ride, we eat cupcakes (purchased at a woman-owned bakery, natch).

All proceeds benefit the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation.
